In discussing the topic of demons and their interaction with humanity, we find two extremes in the modern church. One, demons don’t exist and if they do exist, they certainly don’t have any influence over christians. Two, demons have unfettered access to humans and every problem in the human experience, from physical to spiritual, are the result of demons. The truth is somewhere in the middle.
Demons are often confused with fallen angels. Fallen angels have spirit bodies and can manifest as physical bodies. Demons are disembodied and seek bodies to inhabit. Scholars differ in opinion as to the origin of demons but the book of Enoch, I believe, gives us the true identity of these demonic spirits. The book of Enoch is not part of our canon of scriptures but is recognized and respected by most ancient and modern scholars. This is confirmed by the fact that The New Testament book of Jude quotes from the book of Enoch. ( Jude 1: 14-15 ) Enoch tell us that demons are the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim who perished in The Flood of Noah. As discussed in previous letters, Genesis 6 gives reference to the origin of the Nephilim and their destruction. The book of Enoch grants us many more details about this extraordinary event. Although we may differ in our thinking as to the origin of demons, their future is eternal destruction. If Lucifer is to be cast into the lake of fire, one can probably deduce the same punishment awaits all dark spiritual entities.
These demons once inhabited physical bodies and yearn to do so again. They long to satisfy their unholy appetites and lusts, caring not who they harm or defile. They are unclean in every way. Before the incarnation of Jesus Christ, men were at the mercy of these dark entities. The Son of God demonstrated His authority over these spirits and gave this same authority to His followers.
Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, ” What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” Mark 1:27 NKJV
” And these signs will follow those who believe: In my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; Mark 16:17 NKJV
Demonic spirits must submit to the Name of Jesus Christ. In our next troubleshooting letter, we will go into detail about demon’s interaction with humans and our Heavenly Father’s provision for their defeat.
