LETTER XVI

Greetings in The Name of Jesus Christ, The Judge of the quick and the dead,

As we examine the interaction of the born-again experience and our soul, let’s take another look at the soul and go a little deeper. As you recall, the soul is the interaction of our spirit and our body. The soul contains our human will, our emotions, our thoughts, and our personality. From the human perspective, your soul is you. When we say we know someone, we are saying we know and interact with the soul of that person. With this introduction, let us precede to the topic of salvation and the soul.

Has anyone, who is reading this blog, ever committed a sin after they were saved? The answer for all of us is an unquestionable, yes. Why? I thought the scriptures teach that we are a new creature in Christ? I thought the old things had passed away? Paul, in Romans chapter 7, gives us an astounding truth.

For I know that in me( that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. Romans 7: 18-23 NKJV

As a born again believer, we now have dual natures. We have a born again spirit and an old man (the soul). Another name for the “old man,” in The Scriptures, is the old nature, the carnal nature, or the flesh.

When a person is saved, a conflict initiates between the righteous, born again spirit and the old man. With the apostle Paul we cry out.

O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Romans 7:24 NKJV

Our Heavenly Father has not given us a partial salvation. He has provided an answer for this conflict between the righteous spirit and the old nature. In the next letter, we will look at the rather astounding way God deals with the old soul.

To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen. Jude 1:25 NKJV

your brother in Christ
